Secure Wireless Networks

We hear this question all the time: Why does it matter if my wireless network is secure? Why should I care?

The default setting for most wireless access points and combination router and access point units is "Open" or On with No Security. Many homes and businesses have open wireless networks and don't even know it.

Most people wouldn't approve of a stranger coming into their office with a laptop and plugging into their network without permission. Having an open wireless network enables this to happen without your knowledge.

The consequences could include someone stealing your internet access, causing interruptions or slowing down your service, eavesdropping, or viewing, altering, and deleting private information on your computer. A rogue computer on your network could infect your machines with a virus. Even worse, a computer criminal could use your open wireless network to cover their tracks.
